Product Overview

The 7406 Hex Inverter Buzzer IC (DIP) is a robust TTL logic device that integrates six independent inverter gates with open-collector high-voltage outputs. Designed for signal inversion and driver tasks, the 7406 lets 5V digital logic drive higher-voltage loads such as buzzers, relays, LEDs, and indicator lamps when used with external pull-up resistors.

Key Features

  • Six independent NOT (inverter) gates in a single DIP-14 package
  • Open-collector outputs capable of handling up to 30V output voltage
  • Suitable for driving buzzers, relays, LEDs and other external devices with pull-ups
  • TTL 7400 series compatibility and CMOS-friendly interfacing
  • Fast switching and high noise immunity with low power consumption
  • Standard DIP-14 package for easy prototyping on breadboards and PCBs

Applications

  • Buzzer and relay driver circuits using open-collector outputs
  • Logic signal inversion in digital and embedded systems
  • Voltage level shifting and signal buffering between TTL and higher-voltage devices
  • LED driving circuits and indicator controls
  • Alarm, notification and industrial control circuits requiring buzzer control

Typical Usage and Wiring Tips

Because the 7406 outputs are open-collector, each output requires an external pull-up resistor to the voltage you want to switch (up to the 30V maximum). Typical wiring for driving a buzzer or LED:

  • Connect Vcc to 5V and ground to 0V for IC power.
  • Attach the output pin to the negative side of the load (buzzer, LED with series resistor, or relay coil).
  • Connect the positive side of the load to the required supply voltage (e.g., 12V) through a suitable pull-up or power supply.
  • Choose pull-up resistor value according to supply voltage and required sink current; do not exceed 40mA sink per output.
  • For loads requiring higher current than 40mA or inductive loads with high back-EMF, use an external transistor or driver and add a flyback diode for protection.

Package and Mounting

The 7406 is supplied in a standard DIP-14 package ideal for soldering into PCBs, using IC sockets, or mounting on solderless breadboards for prototyping. Pinout follows typical 7400 series conventions for easy integration into existing designs.

Compatibility and Interfacing

The 7406 is part of the 7400 TTL family and is compatible with TTL and many CMOS logic devices when proper voltage levels are observed. It is optimized for 5V logic systems and provides a simple, reliable interface to higher-voltage loads via its open-collector outputs.
