The u-blox NEO-M8N Serial UART Interface GPS Module is a high-performance satellite positioning module designed to provide accurate real-time location, speed, altitude, and time information. Based on the u-blox NEO-M8N GPS receiver, it is widely used in robotics, drones, vehicle tracking, navigation systems, IoT projects, and embedded electronics applications.

The module communicates with microcontrollers and development boards through a Serial UART interface, making it easy to connect with Arduino, ESP32, STM32, Raspberry Pi, and other embedded platforms. It can receive signals from multiple Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), providing improved positioning performance compared with basic GPS-only modules.

Many NEO-M8N module versions include an external active GPS antenna with a u.FL/IPEX connector for improved satellite reception and easier antenna placement.

Important: Verify the operating voltage and UART logic levels of your specific module before connecting it to a microcontroller.

Working Principle

The NEO-M8N module receives radio signals transmitted by navigation satellites. By processing signals from multiple satellites, it calculates its geographical position using satellite-based positioning.

The module determines information such as:

  • Latitude
  • Longitude
  • Altitude
  • Ground Speed
  • Direction of Movement
  • UTC Date and Time

The calculated information is sent through the UART serial interface as NMEA data sentences. A connected microcontroller can read and process this data for navigation, tracking, mapping, or automation applications.

For accurate positioning, the module requires a clear view of the sky and sufficient satellite signal reception.

Applications

  • GPS Vehicle Tracking
  • Robotics Navigation
  • Drone Projects
  • Autonomous Vehicles
  • Arduino GPS Projects
  • ESP32 IoT Projects
  • Raspberry Pi GPS Applications
  • GPS Data Logging
  • Smart Agriculture
  • Fleet Management
  • Navigation Systems
  • Geographic Position Tracking
  • Asset Tracking
  • Outdoor Embedded Systems

  • Accurate real-time positioning
  • Easy UART serial communication
  • Supports multi-GNSS positioning
  • High sensitivity for improved satellite reception
  • Compatible with many microcontroller platforms
  • Provides location, speed, altitude, and time data
  • Compact and lightweight design
  • Suitable for DIY and professional projects

Usage Tips

  • Install the module where the GPS antenna has a clear view of the sky.
  • Initial satellite acquisition may take longer when the module is first powered on.
  • Connect the antenna securely before use.
  • Avoid placing the antenna close to motors, high-current wires, or sources of electrical interference.
  • Verify the VCC voltage requirements of your specific NEO-M8N module.
  • Ensure that the GPS TX pin is connected to the microcontroller RX pin.
  • Use the appropriate UART baud rate configured for the module.
  • Indoor use may result in weak or unavailable satellite signals.
