Quick Start and Example Projects

Getting started with the CD4017 is straightforward. Provide a clean clock signal to the clock input and use resistors and LEDs on the decoded outputs to build a simple LED chaser. Use the reset pin to return the count to Q0 and the clock inhibit to pause counting. To build longer sequences, cascade multiple CD4017 devices using the carry-out signal.

Simple LED Chaser

  1. Connect VDD (positive supply) and VSS (ground) within 3V to 15V range.
  2. Feed a clock signal (from a 555 timer or microcontroller) to the clock input.
  3. Connect LEDs with suitable current-limiting resistors to outputs Q0–Q9.
  4. Use the reset pin to restart the sequence and clock inhibit to pause.

Cascading Counters

To create counts beyond 10, connect the COUT of the first CD4017 to the clock input of a second CD4017. Use the reset inputs to synchronize multiple devices.
