Overview: CD4017 Decade Counter IC (DIP)

The CD4017 Decade Counter IC is a popular CMOS 5-stage Johnson decade counter that provides 10 decoded outputs (Q0 to Q9) plus a carry-out (COUT). It advances one output high at a time on each clock pulse, making it perfect for sequencing, counting and divide-by-10 applications. The IC is supplied in a standard DIP package for easy prototyping.

Key Features

  • 5-stage Johnson decade counter with 10 decoded outputs (Q0–Q9)
  • Wide supply voltage range: 3V to 15V (TTL and CMOS friendly)
  • Clock inhibit and reset inputs for flexible control
  • Carry-out (COUT) for cascading multiple counters
  • Low power consumption and high noise immunity
  • Standard DIP form factor for breadboards and prototypes

Technical Specifications

  • Logic family: CMOS
  • Operating voltage: 3 V to 15 V
  • Outputs: 10 decoded outputs (Q0–Q9)
  • Additional pins: Clock inhibit (CI), Reset (RST), Carry-out (COUT)
  • Packaging: Dual Inline Package (DIP)

Applications and Use Cases

  • LED chasers and light sequencers
  • Frequency division and event counters
  • Timing, sequencing and control systems
  • Driving digital displays and multiplexed indicators
  • Educational and hobbyist prototyping projects

Quick Start and Example Projects

Getting started with the CD4017 is straightforward. Provide a clean clock signal to the clock input and use resistors and LEDs on the decoded outputs to build a simple LED chaser. Use the reset pin to return the count to Q0 and the clock inhibit to pause counting. To build longer sequences, cascade multiple CD4017 devices using the carry-out signal.

Simple LED Chaser

  1. Connect VDD (positive supply) and VSS (ground) within 3V to 15V range.
  2. Feed a clock signal (from a 555 timer or microcontroller) to the clock input.
  3. Connect LEDs with suitable current-limiting resistors to outputs Q0–Q9.
  4. Use the reset pin to restart the sequence and clock inhibit to pause.

Cascading Counters

To create counts beyond 10, connect the COUT of the first CD4017 to the clock input of a second CD4017. Use the reset inputs to synchronize multiple devices.

Why Choose CD4017 for Your Project

The CD4017 combines simplicity and versatility. Its wide voltage range, low power operation, and standard DIP package make it an excellent choice for students, hobbyists and professionals building sequencing or counting circuits. The built-in decoded outputs eliminate external decoding logic for many applications, speeding up development and reducing component count.
